    Nikon 14-24 vs 16-35-Real life sample @ 16mm...

The scene: Antwerp from the other side of the Scheldt.
Picture taken on tripod, both lenses @ 16mm, F11, 1/200sec, matrix metering.

Notice: On behalf of the comparison value in relation to this test I was a little unlucky with the weather for this shot. As you see there is a little more sun coming through the clouds on the 14-24 crop against the 16-35crop, which results in a bit more (natural) contrast for the 14-24 crop...

    My thoughts about 14-24 F2.8 vs 16-35 F4 AF-S VR...

Postby StanyB on Mon 1 Mar 2010 20:22

My thoughts after using both 14-24 and 16-35 on FX extensively:

14-24 F2.8 and 16-35F4VRII are made for different purposes and if you want to cover all photographic opportunities in the best way, there are several good reasons to own both.

    • TMHO the 14-24 is a tad sharper than the 16-35, but it isn't much. My 16-35 is a very sharp lens.
    • About colour and microcontrast they are about equal.
    • About distortion @ 16mm the 14-24 wins with a big margin, the 14-24 suits much better for architecture and other situations where distortion control is important.
    • For common wide angle and street photography the 16-35 is much more appealing to me than the 14-24 because of its focal range, the possibility to attach filters(also filters for front lens protection) and last but not least, VR for handhold shooting in lowlight.
    • The 2mm extra on the wide end are not very important for me but it could be important for someone else, for sure while taking the extreme low distortion of the 14-24 in consideration.
